About University

Why should one enroll at the University of Memphis? Achieving serves as the university’s compass. The success of its institution depends on a strong and diverse workforce. 25 Heads of Excellence and five state-approved centers of excellence are located on the campus.

Memphis, Tennessee is home to the University of Memphis (UofM), a public research university. More than 22,000 students are enrolled at the university, which was founded in 1912. The school maintains the Lambuth University campus in Jackson, Tennessee, which is now a branch campus of the University of Memphis, the Herff College of Engineering, the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI), the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, the Loewenberg College of Nursing, the School of Public Health, the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the FedEx Institute of Technology, the Advanced Distributed Learning Workforce Co-Lab, and the Institution. R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity is how the University of Memphis is categorized.

The General Education Bill was passed into law by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. This measure mandated the establishment of three colleges: one in each of the state’s grand divisions and a third institution specifically for African-American students.

The state was forced to pick between Jackson and Memphis as the locations for the new college for West Tennessee after extensive bidding and campaigning. The choice of Memphis was made for several reasons, one of which was the proximity of the train line to the site where a new institution for West Tennessee was proposed. Professors and students would be able to travel home to see their families as a result. East Tennessee State University (ETSU), Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), and Tennessee State University replaced the previous three institutions founded under the General Education Act (TSU).

There were several higher education departments in Memphis operating under the name of the University of Memphis before the General Education Bill’s formation of the West Tennessee Normal School. Pharmacy, dentistry, and law departments were added to an already existing medical school to create the older University of Memphis in 1909.
